Enzymatic cleaners are specialized cleaning solutions that use natural enzymes to break down organic materials like pet urine, feces, and vomit. These enzymes act as catalysts, speeding up chemical reactions to eliminate stains and odors at the source. Unlike traditional cleaners that may mask odors, enzymatic cleaners penetrate deep into carpet fibers for thorough cleaning. By making your own enzymatic cleaner, you can create an effective, eco-friendly solution to keep your carpets fresh and clean.

Materials Needed:

  1. Warm Water: Acts as the base for your cleaner.
  2. Brown Sugar: Serves as a nutrient for the bacteria.
  3. Yeast: Helps in breaking down organic materials.
  4. Lemon or Orange Peels: Provides natural enzymes and a pleasant scent.
  5. Empty Plastic Bottle: To mix and store your cleaner.
  6. Measuring Cup: For accurate measurements.
  7. Funnel: Helps to pour ingredients into the bottle without spilling.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
    • 7 cups of warm water
    • 1 ½ cups of brown sugar
    • 1 cup of lemon or orange peels, chopped
    • 1 teaspoon of yeast
  2. Mix the Ingredients:
    • Using the funnel, pour the brown sugar into the empty plastic bottle.
    • Add the chopped lemon or orange peels to the bottle.
    • Add the teaspoon of yeast.
    • Pour in the warm water.
  3. Fermentation Process:
    • Close the bottle tightly and shake well to mix all the ingredients.
    • Loosen the cap slightly to allow gases to escape during fermentation.
    • Place the bottle in a warm, dark place for about 2 weeks to 1 month. Shake the bottle gently every few days to mix the contents.
  4. Strain the Mixture:
    • After the fermentation period, strain the liquid into another container to remove solid pieces. The liquid is your enzymatic cleaner.

Using the Enzymatic Cleaner:

  1. Blot the Stain: Use a clean cloth to blot up as much of the pet pee as possible. Do not rub, as this can push the stain deeper into the carpet fibers.
  2. Apply the Cleaner: Pour a generous amount of the enzymatic cleaner onto the stained area. Make sure to cover the entire stain and a bit beyond its edges.
  3. Let it Sit: Allow the cleaner to sit on the stain for at least 10-15 minutes. For older stains, you might need to let it sit longer, even overnight.
  4. Blot Again: After letting the cleaner sit, use a clean cloth to blot up the liquid. You can also use a wet/dry vacuum if you have one.
  5. Rinse and Dry: Rinse the area with clean water and blot dry. Make sure to remove as much moisture as possible to prevent mold growth.

Tips for Best Results:

  • Test First: Always test the cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area of your carpet to ensure it does not cause discoloration.
  • Regular Use: For best results, use the cleaner as soon as possible after the stain occurs.
  • Storage: Store the enzymatic cleaner in a cool, dark place. It can last for several months if stored properly.
